Are Universities Doing Enough to Support Outspoken Racialized Faculty?

This panel conversation was organized by Max Haiven and Sarah Olutola from Lakehead University. It was a very frank and direct discussion drawing on experience from “outspoken” racialized faculty members in Canadian universities, including Dean Lily Cho (York), Dr. El Jones (MSVU), Dr. Lana Ray (Lakehead), and myself, moderated by Dr. Olutola. The panel discussion took place virtually on Feb. 10, 2023, and a lightly edited copy is available below:

  1. Outspoken is not a synonym for speaking out. People who speak up like these individuals deserve support and racialized people are often characterized as speaking out of turn when just being regularly assertive. The title is lousy.
